As part of a team of accounting and financial professionals operating in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment, the Accounting Manager is a primary contact between the Division of Financial Affairs (DFA) and all Cornell University colleges, units, and subsidiaries, including campuses and entities outside of Ithaca. The Accounting Manager is responsible for supervising a team of professional accountants in the monitoring, review, support, compilation and analysis of financial information of all types and complexity, including the University's consolidated financial statements.
The Accounting Manager must understand the accounting cycle and transactions related to a large volume of complex and non-routine transactions in order to assist with research on accounting questions and ensure proper presentation. The person in this role will need to interpret business needs, circumstances, materiality and documentation in order to apply generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) guidance, regulation, and university policy and procedures to make decisions on correct accounting treatment and recording.
This position is responsible for producing financial statement footnotes, financial statement preparation and analysis, and will be a subject matter expert for campus units on policy, sound accounting and business process, including internal controls and GAAP accounting questions.
This role requires the ability to apply advanced Microsoft Access, Excel, and query writing skills to precisely analyze data, process entries, and provide guidance, as well as demonstrated exceptional written and verbal communication skills to manage across functions at various levels. Demonstrated proficiency managing projects of various size and complexity, preferably in a software tool such as Microsoft Project.
The person in this position will be expected to work additional hours outside standard university operating hours including nights and weekends as business needs require.
Employees are required to attend staff development training. Employees will participate in performance evaluations including dialogues, 360 degree surveys, assessments, etc.
Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance, with at least five to seven years of accounting or finance experience, including supervising and leading teams of accounting professionals, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
MBA preferred, CMA or CPA required.
Fundamental accounting experience including working knowledge of GAAP.
Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel/Access/Project/Visio.
Strong analytic, written and oral communication, and interpersonal skills.
Experience with data query tools is essential. Ability to use sound judgment, analytical and data-gathering skills, problem-solving, and decision-making in accomplishing tasks.
Possess solid business acumen.
Demonstrated experience effectively working collaboratively as part of a team and helping each member achieve results. Experience building and maintaining effective working relationships.
Experience developing and delivering presentations and training.
Ability to be adaptable and flexible while responding to deadlines on assignments and workflow fluctuations.
Ability to take initiative and set priorities to manage multiple, competing demands.
Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
Familiar with large ERP accounting systems and data query tools similar to those used by Cornell (Kuali Financials, Brio, OBIEE) and working experience with accounting in higher education or other not-for-profit organizations strongly preferred.
Previous experience with investment accounting strongly preferred.
