What you will do: As the Director of Financial Operations, you will play a critical role in the Division of Financial Affairs. There are two major components to this position, which you will drive to success. For the first facet of this position, you will focus on process improvement. Specifically, we will count on you to work closely with the University Controller to create a strategic vision for enhanced internal controls and work across the university to make this vision a reality. The next area of focus is on training and development. You will establish a Division of Financial Affairs training center where you will ‘train the trainers’ in best financial practices that will be developed university wide.
Ensure that staff are adequately prepared to train individuals in the Division of Financial Affairs and throughout the campus on internal controls, accounting principles and accurate financial reporting.
Develop, implement and enforce a robust Internal Control Policy.
Work closely with the University Controller, external accounting firms, and the Division of Financial Affairs accounting staff and other key offices on campus to ensure financial statements comply with ever changing requirements..
While working closely with the University Audit Office, you will assist the various business units across campus in developing customized internal control plans.
Work closely with the Director of the University Service Center, the University Audit Office, the University Controller and key stakeholder groups such as Sponsored Financial Group, Vice Provost organizations, Business Service Center leads to help ensure consistent compliance with all University policies and procedures.
What we need: We need a strategic, forward thinking collaborative leader who thrives on putting strategy into action. Ideally, you will have spent time working in a fast paced, high energy, public accounting environment where you thrived on tackling challenges and leading change. Additionally, you will have:
Bachelor's Degree required with seven to ten years of experience in process improvement, business operations, internal controls, financial accounting, analysis and management.
MBA or equivalent advanced degree is preferred
Proven success with accounting management skills including people management, development and training.
Rock solid understanding of technology such as using data analytics and visualization tools (Tableau).
Proven leadership experience where you have inspired and motivated teams, led culture changed and influenced decision making.
Communication skills are paramount. You will be working with all different levels of the organization and should enjoy explaining complex financial concepts to both financial and non-financial stakeholders.
If you have all those things, great! We have a few more things that we would prefer you to have, but it's ok if you don't.
CPA, MBA or equivalent advanced degree is preferred.
Ideally you will have had some experience working with university administration (including senior level management).
This should go without saying, but we would prefer someone who can hit the ground running and is not afraid to take on a challenge.
